Overview

This assignment has three parts.

Part 1: The learner will interview a pharmacist in your local retail pharmacy or the pharmacist at the facility where you currently work. Address the specific topics by using the list of questions below. You must include the answers to the questions in Part I: The Interview Transcript (below).

Part 2: The learner will integrate the findings from the literature related to the type of technology used by the pharmacist.

Part 3: The learner will provide a summary of what you learned as a result of doing this assignment.

The final APA formatted paper should be broken down into the following three parts (I, II, and III).

Part I: The Interview Transcript

Interview the pharmacist using the questions below. Please provide a transcript of the interview in this part.

1. What type of technology (technologies) does your pharmacy utilize?
2. How does the technology you use enhance internal and external communications between pharmacists, technicians, physicians, advanced medical care providers, and nurses?
3. Describe the process from the time the pharmacy receives an order to the time the medication is dispensed?
4. What are some of the processes or policies that are implemented to ensure patient safety?
5. Discuss the legal and regulatory requirements while using this type of technology. How do you ensure legal and regulatory requirements are maintained.
6. What challenges, related to the use of technology and electronic information, have you experienced? What solutions have you implemented, or changes have you made in your practice to address these challenges? Have you identified any risks associated with using this technology?
7. How has informatics helped and/or hindered patient education and awareness?

Part II: Integrate the Findings from the Literature

Research the specific type of technology your pharmacist described in the interview (for example: electronic health records, automated dispensing cabinets, bar-code medication administration, pharmacy management software, e-prescribing systems, or telepharmacy platforms). You may not find the BRAND of the software, so think about what the application does. What is its purpose, and research based on that.

1. Locate at least two scholarly sources (published within the past 5–7 years) that discuss this technology in the context of pharmacy or healthcare.
2. Summarize what the literature says about the technology’s purpose, effectiveness, safety implications, and challenges.
3. Compare and contrast what you found in the literature with the pharmacist’s perspective from your interview.

Note: If you have difficulty finding articles, try searching using broad terms (e.g., “pharmacy automation,” “electronic prescribing,” “pharmacy informatics,” “automated dispensing cabinet,” “pharmacy information system”) instead of the brand name of the technology.

Part III: Summary

Elaborate as to what you learned about the specific type of technology utilized by the pharmacist; explain its uses and functions, pros and cons, etc.

1. Summarize what you’ve learned by explaining both the positive aspects and negative aspects of the technology used by the pharmacist you interviewed.
2. Using a minimum of 2 scholarly articles (may be the same as above), support your summary with evidence-based practice.
