One common focus of coaching in organizational settings is to work with an employee to construct a personal development plan. In this SLP, you will be developing your own Leadership Growth Plan (LGP). The purpose is to have you learn the steps to developing such a plan so you can help others you are coaching to do the same, but also to come out of the class with a personal plan for your own development as a leader.

Why create a Leadership Growth Plan?

It is one thing to want to be a good leader. It is another to achieve it. Research shows that people who have a vision for where they want to go and then write it down and develop a plan to achieve it are more successful than people who do not. An LGP is designed to help you assess your current skills and capacities as a leader, set goals, and make a plan for enhancing your effectiveness by acquiring new skills.

Assignment Instructions

  • Begin with self-assessment and reflection to understand โ€œWho am I?โ€

  • Write a 2โ€“3 page integrated essay assessing your current attributes and capabilities as a leader.

  • Use headings to organize your paper. Suggested headings: My Personal Values, My Leadership Style, My Motivators, My Competencies.

  • Include a cover page and reference page in addition to the 2โ€“3 pages of analysis.

  • Cite at least one high-quality peer-reviewed reference from the Trident Online Library.

  • Follow APA 7th edition formatting and proofreading expectations.

Keys to the Assignment

  1. Values Assessment:

    • List everything important to you; choose the top five values.

    • Define why each value matters to you.

  2. Leadership Style:

    • Identify your dominant style (authoritative, consulting, participative, delegating, or another).

    • Describe how this style influences your decision-making and interactions with others.

  3. Motivators:

    • Determine what motivates you (e.g., recognition, money, helping others, personal achievement).

    • Rank your top motivators and explain their impact on your leadership.

  4. Competencies Assessment:

    • Evaluate yourself in developing subordinates, modeling behaviors, challenging the status quo, and accountability.

    • Reflect on strengths and areas for growth.

Step 7: Proofread and Edit

  • Use MS Word Editor or other proofreading tools to ensure grammar, spelling, and APA formatting are correct.

  • Confirm your paper meets the 2โ€“3 page requirement (excluding cover and reference pages).

Step 8: Submit on Time

  • Ensure your assignment meets all requirements and is submitted via the course platform by the due date.
